Johnette Brooks Offers Program at Atlanta History Center February 19, 2011

Folks in the Atlanta, Georgia area take note! Johnette Brooks is presenting a program entitled “How to Honor your African American Ancestors by Tracing, Documenting, Publishing & Donating Your Family History.” It will be held at the Atlanta History Center Saturday, February 19, 2011 from 10:30 am to noon.

Join Johnette Brooks of HOLLA at ya ANCESTORS™ as she discusses tips and techniques for conducting African American genealogical research. Johnette will help you navigate the United States Census, slaveholder records, family histories, and other resources to piece together your family history. There is no better time than now to shine a light on the contributions of your African American ancestors to the building of this country!

Knowing your History

When an African-American child is born, the thoughts of a parent are plentiful.  However, an American-American parent that know his/her family's history is two steps ahead of the normal game.

This is a part that will have a foundational basis to speak to her child's skills, as she references the similarities of the child's ancestors.  As she looks into her child's eyes a strong sense of self awareness is evident as she speaks gently to her son/ daughter about who they are and who's they are...

In order to teach your history, one must first know their history.  There is something important, when you know your family history.

RICHARD N. LAMAR DIES AT MILLEDGEVILLE
School Commissioner of Baldwin County---Well-Known Throughout State.  Milledgeville, Ga, July 31 (Special) Richard N. Lamar, aged 62 years, one of the most prominent citizens of Georgia, county school commissioner of Baldwin County, died here this morning at 4 o'clock, after an illness covering a period of several months.
 
Mr. Lamar is survived by a wife, three children, a daughter and son living in New York, and one son in California. All are married. He is also survived by a brother, L.J. Lamar, steward of the Georgia state sanitarium. The funeral will be held here today.

Thomas B. Lamar, South, Near Napier's Ferry per 1869 county map. The estate was selling the land of Thomas B. Lamar in 1866. He had 2,500 acres, 300 of which were on the Oconee River. Inquires were to go to J. H. Nichols or William Ennis, on the property. Macon Daily Telegraph 10-18-1866
